Epupa Falls
A palm-fringed staircase of falls in the far north-west of Namibia, in the homeland of the Himba.
Epupa Falls is a series of cascades where the Kunene River, the border between Namibia and Angola, splinters across a kilometre and a half of rock and baobab-studded islands before dropping about 37 metres into a narrow gorge. In a dry, mountainous corner of Namibia, the sudden green of makalani palms is unforgettable.
Why visit Epupa Falls
This is Kaokoland, the homeland of the semi-nomadic Himba people, and the falls are a gathering place. Sunset from the hills above the cascades is the classic moment; canoe trips and rafting run on the calmer stretches upstream.
Best time to visit Epupa Falls
The Kunene is highest from February to May. In the dry months the falls are smaller but the travelling is easier and the light superb.
How to get to Epupa Falls
Epupa is about 180 km of gravel north of Opuwo; allow two days' driving from Etosha, or fly in by light aircraft.
What to see
At Epupa, the Kunene River spreads out across a wide band of rock and drops through dozens of channels lined with makalani palms and baobabs, with a main fall of around 37 metres into a narrow gorge. Short walks along the rim give views into the gorge, and the hill above the falls is the classic spot for sunset. Upstream, the river is calm enough for guided rafting or kayaking in places.
The Himba of Kaokoland
Epupa lies in the homeland of the Himba, semi-nomadic pastoralists known for their ochre-coloured skin and hair. Visits to Himba homesteads should be arranged with a guide from the community, who can introduce you, translate and make sure the visit is welcome. Ask before taking any photographs.
Practical information
Epupa is about 180 kilometres of gravel north of Opuwo. A 4×4 is strongly recommended, and fuel should be filled in Opuwo. The falls are fullest from about February to May, after rain in the Angolan highlands. Do not swim in the river: there are crocodiles, and the currents near the falls are strong. Malaria is present, especially in the rainy season.
