Kalandula Falls on the Lucala

The Atlas · Angola

Kalandula Falls

One of Africa's largest waterfalls by volume, and still largely unknown outside Angola.

Kalandula Falls drops about 105 metres over a horseshoe-shaped cliff roughly 400 metres wide on the Lucala River in Malanje province, making it one of the largest waterfalls in Africa by volume. A generation of war kept it off the travel map; it is now one of Angola's proudest sights.

Why visit Kalandula Falls

Viewpoints at the top and a steep path to the base give two very different experiences of the same fall. Nearby, the black rock towers of Pungo Andongo hold legends of Queen Njinga, and Cangandala protects the giant sable antelope.

Best time to visit Kalandula Falls

The end of the rainy season, February to May, brings the fullest curtain and rainbows in the afternoon spray.

The Portuguese colonial name was Duque de Bragança Falls.

Practical information

Combine them with the black rock towers of Pungo Andongo. Tourism infrastructure is limited, so travel with an experienced local operator.
