Murchison Falls · Getting there
Getting to Murchison Falls National Park
By road from Kampala via Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, or by light aircraft to the park's airstrips.
Getting to Murchison Falls National Park from Kampala or Entebbe takes about five to six hours by road, usually broken at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, or about an hour by light aircraft to one of the park's airstrips. The park lies in north-western Uganda, where the Victoria Nile flows into Lake Albert.
By road from Kampala and Entebbe
The usual route heads north through Luwero and Nakasongola to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, then on via Masindi to the park. Allow five to six hours from Kampala and a little longer from Entebbe, plus time for the rhino walk. Roads are mostly tarred to the park, with good park tracks inside. Our three-day Murchison Falls safari follows this route.
By air
Scheduled and charter light-aircraft flights from Entebbe and Kampala land at the Pakuba and Bugungu airstrips in the park, saving most of a day. Luggage limits on small aircraft are strict, so pack in soft bags.
Combining with the rest of Uganda
From Murchison Falls, routes continue south along the Albertine Rift to Kibale Forest for chimpanzees, Queen Elizabeth National Park and Bwindi for gorillas, or east to Sipi Falls and north to Kidepo Valley. See our ten-day Uganda waterfalls and gorillas itinerary.
