Chimpanzee Tracking in Budongo Forest
Track habituated chimpanzees in the Budongo Forest, at the southern edge of the Murchison Falls Conservation Area.
Budongo chimpanzee tracking takes you on foot into the Budongo Forest, a large tropical forest at the southern edge of the Murchison Falls Conservation Area, to spend time with a habituated group of wild chimpanzees. It is the easiest way to add primates to a Murchison Falls safari without the long drive to Kibale.
About the Budongo Forest
Budongo is one of the largest natural forests in Uganda, known for its tall mahogany and ironwood trees and for a significant population of wild chimpanzees, the subject of long-term research. Tracking takes place at the Kaniyo Pabidi site, on the road between Masindi and Paraa, inside the conservation area.
How a tracking day works
After a briefing, small groups walk with a ranger guide along forest trails, listening for the chimpanzees' calls and drumming. Groups are kept small, commonly a maximum of eight people. Once the chimpanzees are found, you spend up to an hour with them, keeping your distance and voices low. Sightings are likely but not guaranteed, and the chimpanzees sometimes move deep into the forest.
Permits and rules
Chimpanzee tracking requires a UWA permit, commonly listed at around USD 130 for non-residents; prices are reviewed, so check the current rate. Rules usually include a minimum age, keeping a distance of several metres, not eating near the chimpanzees and not tracking if you are unwell, since chimpanzees can catch human illnesses.
What to wear and bring
Wear long trousers and long sleeves, closed walking shoes, and bring a light rain jacket, drinking water and insect repellent. Trails can be muddy after rain. A camera without flash is fine.
Birding in Budongo
The forest is one of Uganda's best birding sites, with forest species that are hard to find elsewhere in the country. Its famous trail, the Royal Mile, is a favourite with birders.
Adding Budongo to your trip
Budongo lies about an hour to an hour and a half from the falls area, so it fits into the first or last day of a Murchison Falls safari. Our four-day Murchison Falls and Budongo itinerary includes it; for a longer primate trip, add Kibale and Bwindi on the ten-day Uganda route. See also things to do at Murchison Falls.
