Waterfall Safari FAQs

Answers to the most common waterfall safari questions: when to go, visas and health, prices and booking, and what to expect at the falls.

These waterfall safari FAQs cover planning, booking, travel essentials and the falls themselves. If your question is not here, ask us.

Planning

What is a waterfall safari?

A waterfall safari is a wildlife safari built around one or more of Africa's great waterfalls: for example Victoria Falls with game drives in Chobe and Hwange, or Murchison Falls with gorillas and chimpanzees in Uganda. We plan the dates around the water levels at the falls, then build the safari around them.

When is the best time to visit Victoria Falls?

For the most water, March to July; for clear views, Devil's Pool and rafting, August to December. June to August is a popular compromise. See our month-by-month guide.

How many days do I need?

Two to three nights at Victoria Falls, two to three at Murchison Falls, and seven to fourteen days for a full waterfall safari with national parks.

Can you combine Victoria Falls and Murchison Falls in one trip?

Yes. Our Grand Waterfalls of Africa journey links Uganda's Nile falls with Victoria Falls and Chobe, connecting by air through Johannesburg or Nairobi.

Can the itineraries be changed?

Yes. The itineraries on this site are starting points; tell us what you would like to change and we will adapt the plan and quote.

Prices & booking

How much does a waterfall safari cost?

It depends on the season, the lodges you choose, the number of travellers and how you travel between parks. We quote every trip individually and without obligation. Tell us your budget and we will design around it.

What is included in a quote?

Each quote lists exactly what is included and excluded. International flights are usually booked separately; ask us if you would like help with them.

How far ahead should I book?

Six to twelve months for July to October and for Uganda's gorilla permits, which are limited. For other months, three months is often enough.

How do I book?

Send an enquiry with your dates and interests. We reply with a suggested itinerary and quote, and explain the payment and booking terms before you confirm anything.

Travel essentials

Do I need a visa?

Most visitors need visas. The KAZA UniVisa covers Zambia and Zimbabwe; the East Africa Tourist Visa covers Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya. Requirements change, so check them for your passport before you travel. See Plan your trip.

Which vaccinations do I need?

A yellow fever certificate is required for Uganda and for some routes elsewhere. Malaria prevention is recommended in most of the regions we visit. Speak to a travel clinic six to eight weeks before departure.

Is it safe?

The main waterfall destinations are well established for tourism. Check your government’s current travel advice before booking. Safety at the falls themselves mostly means following guides, staying behind railings and never swimming above a waterfall without a licensed operator.

What should I pack for a waterfall safari?

A rain jacket or poncho and a dry bag for high water, sandals or shoes with grip, neutral clothing for game drives, binoculars, a headtorch and layers for cool mornings.

Do I need travel insurance?

Yes, we strongly recommend comprehensive insurance including medical evacuation and cover for any adventure activities you plan.

At the falls

Can you swim at Victoria Falls?

Yes, at Devil's Pool on the Zambian side, with a licensed guide, from about mid-August to January.

Which side of Victoria Falls is better?

Zimbabwe has the most complete views; Zambia gets you closer to the water. We recommend seeing both: read Zambia or Zimbabwe?.

What is the highest waterfall in Africa?

Tugela Falls in South Africa, at about 948 metres in five leaps. Read The Tallest Waterfall in Africa Is Not the One You Think.

Is Murchison Falls worth visiting?

Yes. It is the most powerful waterfall in Africa and sits inside Uganda's largest national park, with lions, elephants, giraffes and the shoebill. See Murchison Falls.
