Things to do at Africa’s waterfalls often depend on the river. Devil’s Pool and the full rafting run need low water; lunar rainbows and the most dramatic helicopter views need high water. Check the month-by-month guide before fixing dates, and see the safari itineraries that include each activity.
Most experiences have rules set by operators or parks. Rafting on the Zambezi usually has a minimum age of 15, and Devil’s Pool requires confident swimmers. The Tugela Falls hike and the Maletsunyane abseil need a good level of fitness and a head for heights, while the Murchison Falls boat trip and the lunar rainbow walk suit almost everyone. Always book through licensed operators, follow your guide’s instructions and check that your travel insurance covers adventure activities.
