Family Waterfall Safaris
Spray, rainbows, elephants and boat trips: waterfall safaris that keep children and grown-ups equally amazed.
A family waterfall safari is one of the easiest ways to introduce children to Africa. Waterfalls give them something big and loud to explore between game drives, boat trips are safe and exciting for all ages, and short transfers mean less time in the car.
Why waterfalls suit families
Children love being soaked by the spray on the rainforest path at Victoria Falls, spotting hippos from the launch at Murchison Falls and counting elephants from a boat on the Chobe River. Most activities need no minimum age, and the falls themselves need no special fitness.
Family-friendly lodges
Victoria Falls Safari Lodge has family rooms and a waterhole visible from the deck; Matetsi has space and private activities; Paraa Safari Lodge at Murchison Falls has a pool and easy access to the launch trips.
Age limits to know
Some activities have minimum ages: rafting, Devil's Pool and walking safaris usually set them, and gorilla trekking in Uganda requires children to be at least 15. We plan around them so no one is left out for long.
Best family routes
The seven-day Victoria Falls and Chobe safari is an easy family route. For older children, the Drakensberg and Zululand route adds hiking and Big Five game drives.
