Murchison Falls Day Trip from Kampala: Is It Worth It?
Can you see Murchison Falls in a day? What a day trip involves, why two or three days work better, and the fastest options.
A Murchison Falls day trip from Kampala is possible but long: the park is roughly five to six hours away by road in each direction, so a single day means leaving before dawn and driving back after dark. For most travellers two or three days give a far better experience.
Why a road day trip is hard
With ten to twelve hours on the road, there is little time left for the falls themselves, and you miss the dawn game drives and the afternoon launch trip that make Murchison special. Driving after dark on Uganda's roads is also best avoided for safety.
The fastest option: fly in
Scheduled and charter light-aircraft flights from Entebbe and Kampala reach the park's airstrips in about an hour, which makes a long day visit or a one-night stay realistic. Luggage limits are strict on small aircraft.
Two days: the minimum we recommend
Two days let you drive up, take the launch trip to the foot of the falls in the afternoon and hike to the top, then do an early game drive on the north bank before returning. See our two-day Murchison Falls safari.
Three or four days: the full experience
With three days you can add Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary on the way and a second game drive or the delta cruise for shoebills, as on our three-day Murchison Falls safari. Four days add chimpanzee tracking in the Budongo Forest.
Planning tips
Leave Kampala early to beat the traffic, and plan around the Paraa ferry times if you are crossing the Nile. Check the park fees before you go, since entry is charged per 24 hours.
